Question:
We are planning to travel to Vietnam and some other countries in Indochina. We not yet make out the plan on the duration yet, just know for sure that it is about 1 month, may be more or less. Please advice how long can I stay in Vietnam on a tourist visa?
Answer:
Vietnam tourist visa, which is categorized as Vietnam DL visa, is normally valid for 1 month to 3 months. However, this visa can be extended for one month or three months more to help visitors can stay in Vietnam longer than their DL visa’s permited remaining duration without leaving the country.
At present, Vietnam tourist visa is divided into 4 sub-types: 1 month single entry visa, 1 month multiple entries visa, 3 month single entry visa and three month multiple entries visa. 1 month tourist visa allows foreign visitors to enter and reside in Vietnam up to 30 days. About 3 month visa, visitors can stay in the country up to 90 days (3 months).
According to the regulation of Vietnam Immigration Department, visitors entering Vietnam by a tourist visa can reside in the country up to 4 months. Therefore, a foreign people can extend his tourist visa for 2 or 3 months if he owns a one-month visa. On the other hand, people entering Vietnam by a three- month tourist visa often can extend it for 1 more month.
Please do note that the extension fee of Vietnam visa (DL visa extension) is subjected to be higher than a new visa getting when you are outside the country. Normally, the cost to extend a one-month tourist visa for 1 more month is USD 90. The extension fee can be higher for 2 month or 3 month visa extension options. In addition, the cost to extend a three-month tourist visa is also more expensive than extending a one-month visa. Thus, in case you exit Vietnam before your visa expiration date by any chance, we often advise our clients to apply for a new visa (to be picked up at the Embassy of Vietnam or at Vietnam airport).
In addition, the cost of getting 1 month visa extension is higher than the cost of applying for a three-month tourist visa from outside Vietnam. Therefore, those people who have not had a clear plan about how long you will stay in Vietnam, getting a three month tourist visa is highly recommended. With this option, you can stay in Vietnam up to 90 days. Then, when your visa is going to expire, you can extend it to continue staying in the country.
