How to enter and exit Vietnam with USA passport?

For a USA citizen, it is required to have a Vietnam visa stamped on to a valid passport or a visa approval letter granted by Immigration department of Vietnam before entering Vietnam.

With regards to mode of getting Vietnam visa, there are 2 kinds: Visa on arrival and visa code.

Visa on arrival nowadays becomes very popular and is chosen by most of the air travelers, because it is convenient, easy to get, and cheaper as well.

For getting Vietnam visa on arrival, USA passport holder can apply online for a pre- approved visa on arrival, no matter where USA citizens live. You just need to follow these simple steps as below to get a visa approval letter:

-         Complete Vietnam visa application form

-         Make payment for approval fee for the visa request

-         After 2 business days ( standard service), 1 business day ( urgent service)  or 4 working hours ( super urgent service)  the  visa approval letter will be issued by the Immigration Department and sent via your registered email

After having the pre- approved visa on arrival, USA citizens just need to print it out and prepare with passport and 2 passport photos size to show at Vietnam national airport to be stamped the Vietnam visa on to passport.

For visa code which is applicable for land, cruise and air travelers. Applicants must go to the Vietnam Embassy or Consulate in USA to apply for a visa for Vietnam by themselves. The applicants need to finish the required forms and wait for about 5 working days, sometimes a whole week for the staff of the Embassy to check the applicant’s request.  Please note that in some cases, the visa requests can be rejected. Therefore, we highly recommend visa on arrival.

Please be kindly noted that the validity of all Vietnam visas depends on your request, USA citizens should to take care of Vietnam visa’s validity to avoid staying over in Vietnam and having trouble when you exit. 

To exit Vietnam, there is no especial request, USA citizens just need to show US passport and the valid visa on the passport, and then the staff at Vietnam airport will stamp an exit seal.
