Currently, UK passport holders can enjoy visa exemption for staying in Vietnam no more than the period of 15 days. However, in your case, you plan to stay up to 29 days, so the 15-day visa exemption is not recommended. Though you can even extend the visa for longer stay duration of 15 days, the extension fee and the complicated procedure may be a very a big disadvantage of this option.
1 month Vietnam visa allows you to stay fully 30 days. In reality, many people may have unexpected things to deal with, simply want to stay more, or due to such objective reason as they have change flight, asking fa or 30-day visa for the stay of nearly the same length duration is not an effective choice. Therefore, you may consider the option of getting a 90- day visa, which costs just a few USD more, compared with the one-month type. Having ng 3-month visa, you will be more flexible with your travel plan.

How is the validity calculated?
The visa validity is as valid right as the date noted in it. Therefore, if you enter Vietnam later than the starting date of your visa, you are allowed to stay within the remained date only. For example, the visa is valid from May 3 to May 4, and you enter Vietnam on May 15, then you are allowed to stay from 15 to May 4, not 30 days after May 15.

UK passport planning to stay in Vietnam less than 15 days are not subjected to apply for a visa before travelling. You just make sure your passport is still valid for at least 6 month from the entry date into Vietnam.
